Fly Scoot cabin crew interview process and stages

Below are the interview process & stages of Fly Scoot shared by one of my reader.

1. Once you are arrive at the venue, you are required to register yourself and you will be given a number and your personal file. At this stage they will also measure you height.

2. In a group of 10, each will be asked to pick an envelope, inside it will contain one word (Eg, Medicine, Rock & Roll, childhood, Iphone, Shanghai etc), then you will be given 2mins to prepare for the 2mins presentation based on the word that you get. (I think this round they want to see your confidence and how you present yourself). Those who pass will proceed to the group discussion.

3. In this group discussion, you will be divided into groups of 6 or 8. A board game will be given and you and your team mate will have to figure out how to play it. (The staff will be seating with you and observe every one), those who are successful will proceed to the next stage.

4. If you pass, you will proceed to another group discussion again. They will post more question and we are required to discuss about it as a group. (Almost same with Jetstar, they will ask for example if you are trap in a forest and you can only bring 7 thing out of 16 what will you choose, thing like, campass, map, knife, food, phone, etc,), those success will stay.

5. Next round, the staff will slightly brief you on the company profile and then followed by an English and math test, (about 20min to do each test), after that the staff will mark the test on the spot, once you fail, they will ask you to leave

6. Final round, 1-1 interview with the head of cabin crew.

7.Once it is done, finally you can go home and wait for their notice. Those who are successful, they will call and email you to do a profile test. If you pass , they will call you for a contract briefing & medical exam etc.

The stages above are not in order, as I heard that the 1st recruitment, they do English and math test first.

Emirates airline to hire more than 4,500 staff starting April

Dubai-based Emirates airline will be hiring more than 4,500 personnel to fill a wide range of vacancies across all continents in the next fiscal year, starting from April 1, 2012.

Alison Ward, Vice-President of Recruitment at Emirates, told Emirates 24l7 that the Arab world’s largest carrier will add 450 pilots and around 4,000 cabin crew in the next fiscal year.

“Emirates is planning to recruit approximately 450 pilots in the upcoming fiscal year, this is in addition to our recruitment of 570 pilots last year. We also need around 4,000 cabin crew in the next fiscal year; plus hundreds of operational staff as well,” Ward said.

The carrier said recently that so far in 2012 alone, the airline has recruited cabin crew talent in US states including Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington DC and will be holding an open day in Seattle in March. Emirates will be holding pilot recruitment drives in Atlanta and New York over the coming months.

Emirates airline recently held open days in the UAE and will hold more open days in the UAE and other countries in the coming yeas to fill a wide range of vacancies including engineering, airport operations, cabin crew and IT.

“Emirates holds open days for a variety of positions throughout the year on a monthly basis; most regularly are open days for pilots, cabin crew and engineering roles.

"However, Emirates also holds recruitment events for other positions such as airport operations and IT, as needed. Candidates interested in any role with Emirates or Dnata are encouraged to look at its website for the latest information about recruitment events and positions available across the Group,” Ward told Emirates24l7.

Ward said Emirates has held several recruitment events for both UAE nationals and expatriates.
“With our headquarters based in Dubai, the majority of our roles are also located here. Recently Emirates has conducted road shows for Emirati high school graduates across the UAE for operational roles such as pilots, cabin crew, engineering and airport services.

Additionally, we have hosted open days for cabin crew roles and staff for the new Concourse 3 at Dubai International Airport which were open to all nationalities. Emirates will continue to recruit and employ staff in the UAE to support the airline’s continued growth.”

The Dubai-based carrier announced in the last fiscal year that it would hire 4,000 personnel. When asked if these are in addition to the numbers announced in the previous year, Ward said: “The figure for the number of cabin crew needed has remained relatively the same year over year due to the fact that Emirates is continually receiving additional aircraft.

"Approximately 35 new aircraft will be added to the fleet this year and Emirates will need additional cabin crew to support these aircraft, just as it did last year. Emirates successfully met its cabin crew recruitment goals last year and looks forward to another positive recruitment year.”

The Emirates fleet has grown to 162 aircraft with another $55 billion on order, carrying more than 30 million passengers in its last fiscal year to a network now spanning 122 cities. The airline posted a profit of Dh5.46 billion ($1.49 billion) in the year to March 31, 2011.

Emirates’ profit in the first half of current fiscal year ended on September 30, 2011 plunged 76 per cent as fuel costs surged by $1 billion.

Approximately 35 aircraft will be added to the fleet by Emirates in this fiscal year which relates to around 2-4 aircraft each month (Boeing and Airbus together) with one per month being an A380.
“We do not have specific targets for certain countries but instead look to hire qualified candidates who can meet Emirates high level of safety and standards.

"One change to Emirates pilot recruitment this year is that we will be hiring experienced pilot into captain roles within the organisation. Previously, all pilots, regardless of experience and qualifications, joined in the First Officer roles.

However, due to the aircraft joining the fleet this year and our estimated increased need for flight crew, Emirates has opened up recruitment to captain roles and it has met with great success,” Ward said.

In November last year, Dubai Duty Free announced that it would recruit
1,000 personnel in 2012 for the launch of its outlets at Dubai Airports’ third concourse.

Requirements for the Position of Captain A330/B777

A minimum of 7000 hours total flying time (only front seat time on turboprop and/or turbojet aircraft can be counted).
A minimum of 3000 hours command time on multi-crew, multi-engine commercial jet aircraft with an MTOW of 50 tonnes or more.

Note: We do not accept simulator time for flying hours calculation.

Must hold a valid ICAO ATPL with an unrestricted class one medical certificate
English language fluency (written and verbal comprehension); must be at least equal to ICAO English level 5.
Must have flown as an aircraft commander on a jet meeting the above mentioned criteria, within 12 months of joining
Preference will be given to type rated Airbus A330/340, B777 or other relevant wide body commanders and Instructors/Examiners
Requirements: For the position of First Officer (prior to joining):
- A minimum of 4000 hours total flying time (may include 25% P3 or FEO time to a max of 500 hr).

Indonesia - Airline expansion and aviation boom

Confirmation of Indonesia's position as the fastest-growing air transport market in Southeast Asia came at February's Singapore air show, where the nation's airlines dominated the news. Garuda Indonesia, the flag carrier, confirmed the expected deal for up to 36 Bombardier CRJ1000 regional jets.

Its fierce rival Lion Air confirmed its order for the Boeing 737 Max 9 and additional ATR 72-600 turboprops. Finally, Pacific Royale, a full-service start-up, said it would begin operations in March with two Airbus A320s and two Fokker 50s.

It will join Lion Air's subsidiary Space Jet, which will offer full-service operations from 2013, and Sriwijaya which is retrofitting its aircraft to include business class seats in the full-service market. In the low-fare segment, Mandala Air will soon resume operations after Tiger Airways' plan to take a stake in the airline went through. Indonesia AirAsia continues to grow as it eyes an IPO this year, while Merpati is looking to rejuvenate its fleet. All of them are eyeing a share of the growing pie. IATA has forecast international passenger numbers to Indonesia could grow by 9.3% a year from 2010 to 2014, when it is expected to reach 22.7 million. Domestic numbers are expected to grow by 8.7% annually to 38.9 million passengers by 2014.

Double talk: Garuda's Emirsyah Satar (right) plans two-fold fleet rise

This is on the back of an expected annual GDP growth of 6.5% until 2015, in a country that is also a large archipelago with 33 provinces and almost 240 million people. The geography lends itself to a market that requires several international and domestic air hubs, and numerous services to the tier one and two cities where there are no direct connections. There is an urgent need to improve the infrastructure, especially at the capital Jakarta, where the main Soekarno-Hatta airport handled43.7 million passengers in 2010 despite having capacity for only 38 million. That has not stopped the airlines.

Garuda has announced plans to more than double its fleet to as many as 194 aircraft by 2015. These include 18 CRJ1000s, of which six will be purchased directly from Bombardier and 12 procured from leasing company Nordic Aviation. It also has options for another 18 of the type. The aircraft, which will be in a two-class configuration, will be based in tier two Indonesian cities such as Makassar, Medan and Balikpapan and used on both international and domestic routes. The flag carrier is using subsidiary Citilink to take on Lion Air in the low-cost segment. It signed a contract with RBS Aviation Capital for the lease of four new A320s for Citilink, and has a backlog of 25 A320s due for delivery between 2014 and 2018.

"With this expanded fleet, Citilink will become a major airline in Indonesia. Garuda will then focus on full service customers, while Citilink will focus on budget travellers," says Garuda chief executive Emirsyah Satar.

Lion Air, however, continues to grow. It signed a firm order for 201 737 Max aircraft at the show for delivery from 2017, becoming the launch customer for the -9 variant. It also ordered an additional 29 737-900ERs in a combined deal for 230 aircraft worth $22.4 billion.

Purchase rights have also been secured for an additional 150 aircraft. It also inked an order for 27 ATR 72-600s, in a deal worth $610 million, for regional subsidiary Wings Air.

This order will make it the largest ATR operator worldwide, with a fleet of 60 turboprops when all the aircraft are delivered by 2015. Wings Air will use them to develop new routes departing mainly from Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the Papua islands.

Sealed: Lion Air's huge 737 deal was one of several it signed at show

Lion Air, however, is also keeping one eye on Garuda's full service market segment with its Space Jet plan. These will initially begin with 737-900ERs it has on order in 2013, on both domestic and regional routes, and later include either Airbus A330s or Boeing 787s.
"Right now, if I want to go to Tokyo [I will] have to go from Singapore or Jakarta. This will take the same time as from Manado, and the government is also keen to make this city the gateway to Asia-Pacific," says chief executive Rusdi Kirana.
Rusdi dismisses concerns about overcapacity in Indonesia because of the fleet expansion plans of Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air. He believes the Indonesian market has room to operate up to 1,000 aircraft.

"If you look at how many people there are in America, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia and compare the ASK, we have 230 million people but our ASK is much, much lower than Singapore's," says Rusdi. "We have the chance to grow, and we will continue to do so."

My last advice and tip for 2011 before we welcome 2012

First of all would like to wish each and every one of you Merry Christmas. 2011 is coming to an end and I guess it has been a fantastic year for those of you who have managed to achieve your dreams and start a career in the airline industry.

Would like to give you all a tip before we wrap up the year. Have you notice that whenever you want something in life, you always think about yourself only and not the other party.It’s only all about your own success, your dreams or whatever your priority is.

I am sure you heard of the phrase “ no one owe you a living “ and you may realise that sometimes when you ask for help, no one bother to help you and you wonder why.

Let’s put something that you are pursuing on hold and think for a second. Before you think about yourself, you might want to consider what you can do to benefit others.

Let me give you an example. You attend an interview/open day and make new friends. You approach them and start telling them about your goals, how you wish to travel round the world as a crew or hope to get whatever tips from them. Then you ask them to help you.

Do you think he/she will help you?

Or if you are in business, you have a great idea, how are you going to help your business partner achieve more money first before you ask for their help.

It has to be a “win win situation”. Try to help/contribute to others even when you don’t need them. I am sure you have friends who have never contacted you at all and they only do so when they need your help.

It’s very natural for human to think about themselves only but the other person may have the same thinking too. So it’s important that you change your mindset then think of what you can do for other people in order to get what you want.

It’s almost impossible to achieve everything on your own. Maybe you can but you’ll be drained or feel exhausted. Almost everything we do in life, somewhere down the road we always need the help from others or the need to work in a team to achieve our goals.

For example, normally there will be group discussion in an interview session and you always grab the opportunity to talk and leave little chance for others to present their views. You try to stand out and grab all the attention for yourself and neglect the rest. Then you were told that you were not successful and you start to wonder why you failed when you thought you did a great job. Pretty obvious right?

So whether you want to become a pilot, cabin crew or any of your chosen career, do take note of my tip above. I hope you learn something from this post and trust me, when you learn to help and think about others, whatever you want to achieve will naturally come.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines said on Wednesday it would cut loss-making routes to South Africa and other destinations and set up a new regional premium carrier in a bid to return to profit in two years.

The national flag carrier said it would suspend services to Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as Buenos Aires "and other destinations" under a new business plan.

"Malaysia Airlines needs to make hard and unpopular decisions simply to survive," group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in a statement.

"A leaner and meaner organisation will quickly become an agile, competitive and winning organisation."

The airline, which has struggled to stay in the black in recent years, said more than 40 percent of its routes were loss-making. It gave no further details on the route suspensions, such as a timetable.

However, the business plan said it planned to launch a new regional premium airline by the second half of 2012 that would service Southeast Asia "and key cities in South Asia and Greater China."

The new airline would eventually service all domestic and regional routes flown by Malaysia Airlines, it said, giving no details.

Malaysia Airlines also announced it would deploy 23 new aircraft next year to phase out its fleets of ageing Airbus A330-200s and Boeing B747-400s.

In the third quarter of this year, the airline posted its third straight quarterly loss as it continued to struggle, along with other airlines, with high fuel costs and increased competition.

In August, Malaysia Airlines and its fierce rival, budget carrier AirAsia, announced a surprise alliance that would eliminate head-to-head competition and allow each to focus on their core markets.

Analysts have hailed the deal as a way to revive the struggling carrier, saying Malaysia-based AirAsia would be able to concentrate on offering low-cost journeys, while Malaysia Airlines can focus on catering to more upmarket travellers.

I have actually watched this video few years back and recently came across on it again. Thought would be great to share with all of you especially those of you who are facing difficulty in life now.

Whenever I am down, I always tell myself how lucky am I to be born healthy. To be able to do the things I like in life and most importantly able to share my knowledge and help others through FlyGosh.

Hopefully after watching this video, failing an interview, giving up on your goals, feeling upset on not being able to achieve your dream especially on becoming a pilot or cabin crew and etc etc is no longer seen as " the end of the world ".

I know cause I get so many complains from my readers on their challenges in life whether it's personal like breaking up or aviation related. But in a way I am grateful for the level of trust you all place on me and I am always glad to help.

Emirates Places Order for 50 Boeing 777-300 ERs with Options for 20 777-300 ERs Valued at US$26 Billion

Record breaking aircraft order is the single largest by any airline with Boeing

DUBAI, U.A.E., Dubai Air Show ,13th November 2011: Emirates (www.emirates.com), one of the world’s fastest growing airlines, today placed the single largest aircraft order in dollar value in Boeing’s history for an additional 50 777-300 ER aircraft, worth approximately US$ 18 billion (AED 66 billion) in list price. The order also included 20 777-300 ER options valued at US$8 billion (AED 29.4 billion), for a total of 70 aircraft valued at US$ 26 billion (AED 95.4 billion).

This record breaking long-range aircraft order, adds to Emirates existing world’s largest fleet of 95 777s in service including nine 200 ERs, 10-200 LRs, 12 -300s, 61-300 ERs and three freighters. Emirates had 40 777-300 ERs already on the order books, so with today’s order that now stands at a firm order of 90 777-300 ERs.

The agreement was signed today during a ceremony at the Dubai Air Show by His Highness (H.H.) Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group, and Jim Albaugh, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The signing was also witnessed by Emirates senior executives, Tim Clark, President, Emirates airline and Adel Al Redha, Emirates Executive Vice President, Engineering and Operations as well as David Joyce, President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Aviation, whose GE 90-115B engine will power the 777-300 ER aircraft.

“With 61 777 300-ERs currently in service, this record breaking dollar value order is another milestone for Emirates and affirms our strategy to expand our long haul destinations and continue to excel as a world leading carrier, connecting the world to Dubai and beyond,” said H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group. “The Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft plays a pivotal role in Emirates development of a modern fleet to meet the demand for global air travel for the future.”

The 777-300ER will be operated in a three-class configuration with eight First Class suites, 42 Business Class seats and 310 Economy Class seats and offers an additional cargo payload of 20.1 tonnes.

"This is an extremely proud moment for us as it not only underscores Emirates' on going confidence in the 777 but also makes this the single largest order in dollar value in Boeing’s history," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "As the largest operator of the 777 in the world, Emirates has played an important role in development of the airplane and its input over the years has been invaluable in the development of the 777 program."

“ Today’s 777-300 ER order gives Emirates the ability to replace some of our older existing aircraft allowing us to maintain our leadership in fuel efficiency as well as providing our customers with an updated superior product,” said Tim Clark, President, Emirates. “Our passengers can look forward to continued innovations in aircraft comfort, entertainment and service for which Emirates is renowned.”

Emirates currently has a fleet of 162 wide-bodied aircraft, flying to 115 destinations in 67 countries. The airline is on track to become one of the largest airlines in the world. In addition to the 50 777-300 ERs announced today, Emirates has 73 Airbus A380s, 70 Airbus A350s, 40 777-300 ERs and six Boeing freighters on order, for a total of 239 wide-body aircraft worth more than US$92 billion (AED 337.6 billion).

Where the Airbus A380 will fly next

Next month marks the fourth anniversary of the Airbus A380's entry into service. Since the maiden commercial flight by Singapore Airlines, A380s have carried more than 20 million passengers on flights with SIA and five other operators: Emirates, Qantas, Lufthansa, Air France and Korean Air. 56 A380s are now in service, with approximately ten more to be delivered by the end of the year. A380 operations are clustered around a handful of key international points. A380s currently serve 25 airports on 38 separate routes. Seven airports account for more than half of all A380 routes.

Outside of the home hubs of A380 operators – Singapore, Dubai, Sydney, Melbourne, Paris CDG, Frankfurt and Seoul Incheon – the most important airports are New York JFK and Tokyo Narita. These airports have four airlines flying A380s to/from them. London Heathrow and Hong Kong have three airlines flying A380s to/from them.

Half of the world's 30 busiest international airport have A380 service - the rest coming soon

Fifteen of the world's 30 busiest airports by international traffic have A380 operations at present. Four more - Amsterdam Schipol, Munich, Kuala Lumpur and Rome Fiumicino - will have A380 services added under the upcoming Northern Winter schedule.

Most of the remaining leading international airports without A380 services are capable of handling the aircraft. Several airports - such as London Gatwick - have been actively wooing airlines to bring in A380s.

As of Aug-2011, the A380 was cleared to operate to over 130 airports worldwide. Given the size of the aircraft and some of its specialised needs in terms of air traffic separation and runway, taxiway, gate and aircraft parking requirements, this is a significant destination pool. But with almost all carriers but Emirates having placed small orders for the A380, they will likely continue to concentrate their A380 operations on a small selection of those 130 airports, especially when it is considered some long-haul routes require more than one aircraft per daily rotation.

The world’s busiest airport (total domestic + international passengers) Atlanta Hartsfield–Jackson, is notably absent from the list of A380 airports, although that will change with the introduction of service by Korean Air from 2012. Other major airports in the top 30 (in terms of international and domestic) with A380 services include Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong and Sydney.

Changing strategy and operational patterns

Early operators such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Qantas deployed the aircraft on long-haul, premium oriented routes. Their route strategies maximised the scarcity and novelty value of the aircraft for passengers, as well as its efficiency and capacity. As more aircraft have entered service and more carriers join the operating roster, the A380 route network and its role in airline network planning has slowly begun to fill out. This will continue as airlines like Emirates and Qantas take delivery of A380 aircraft configured with more seats than their existing A380 fleet. Such configurations less reliant on premium passengers will see the A380 open secondary premium markets or markets more targeted towards leisure traffic.

Emirates – leading A380 strategy

Emirates, the largest A380 operator with 15 aircraft in service and 75 more in order, has been one of the leaders in this changing strategy. As the global financial crisis bit into corporate travel budgets in 2008 and premium and business travel dropped, the airline showed its flexibility by pulling the A380 off its flagship Dubai-New York route. It re-deployed the aircraft to Bangkok and Toronto – destinations that suited the higher capacity of the aircraft.

Despite the relatively small size of the city, Toronto is a particularly strong example for Airbus' case that the A380 can act as a congestion buster. With the UAE-Canadian bilateral air services agreement limiting Emirates to three flights per week, deploying the A380 allowed the carrier to boost its capacity into Toronto by around 420 seats per week without increasing the number of flights.

Shorter routes and somewhat smaller destinations are beginning to appear on the A380 route map, again with Emirates leading the strategic adjustment. Since Jan-2010, the Middle Eastern carrier has operated its ‘medium density’ configured A380s - with 517 seats - on the Dubai-Jeddah service, a sector of just three hours. This also helps Emirates increase the A380's utilisation rate as it would otherwise spend large amounts of time on the ground.

Emirates has also requested approval to operate A380s on high-yielding sectors into India, although it has not yet received permission from the Indian Government to do so. A similar regulatory block has stymied Lufthansa's attempts to fly A380s into India.

Emirates is also pushing the aircraft into smaller airports. The carrier put A380s onto Dubai-Manchester service in Sep-2010 – replacing a B777-300ER - and has seen its traffic to the city hit record levels.

Korean Air makes cautious start

In Asia, Korean Air had a cautious launch of A380 operations in Jun-2011 by deploying the aircraft only to regional destinations (Tokyo Narita, Hong Kong, Bangkok). All Nippon Airways will take a similar approach with its B787s, initially using them regionally, whereas early A380 operators Emirates and Qantas immediately placed their A380s on ultra-long-haul routes. Launch operator Singapore Airlines confined its initial A380 operations to the Singapore-Sydney route before expanding to ultra-long-haul sectors. Such caution is not without merit as Emirates, citing engineering work, had to temporarily withdraw its A380 operations a month after the launch. Deployment on short sectors also permits staff, especially pilots, to quickly gain in-service experience.

Korean Air is continuing to shift some of the aircraft to long-haul destinations, including Paris CDG, Frankfurt, New York JFK and Los Angeles. However, it will continue to deploy the A380s into Japan and Hong Kong, further boosting the type's utilisation rate, as Emirates does with Jeddah and Singapore Air to Hong Kong. Korean Air's move demonstrates the A380 has intra-regional capabilities akin to its B747s and B777s that serve short regional flights in-between long-haul sectors, a common strategy replicated across major Asian carriers.

Singapore is also expanding its A380 operation with an announcement earlier this month that it plans to operate Singapore-New York JFK-Frankfurt service with A380s, as it phases out its final B747-400s.

China Southern, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways reveal A380 plans

With three new operators due to take delivery of their first aircraft in the next 12 months, and Airbus pushing production up to 35 aircraft per annum, the A380 fleet will continue to grow and the network strategies for the A380 will continue to develop.

China Southern to open first domestic A380 route

Next month China Southern Airlines will join the list of A380 operators. The carrier ordered its five A380s in 2005 and will operate the first service in mid-Oct-2011. It is the only Chinese airline to have ordered the A380, although an order expected from Hainan Airlines’ subsidiary Hong Kong airlines failed to materialise at this year’s Paris Air Show, reportedly due to Chinese government disapproval of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

China Southern’s addition to the A380 family will also see the first domestic scheduled routes operated with the type. The carrier is planning to operate Beijing-Guangzhou service from 18-Oct-2011, before switching to Beijing-Shanghai service on 27-Oct-2011.

Where the carrier will take the A380 internationally has not been formally announced, as the airline is still awaiting final CAAC sign-off for international services with the aircraft. Reports are that the airline plans to initially operate to Paris, followed by New York JFK, adding another two routes to destinations that already see significant A380 traffic.

The carrier will outfit its A380s in a three-class, 506 seat configuration. China Southern this month will officially unveil the seating arrangement, although seat maps have emerged via Chinese social media sites and been confirmed by the airline.

China Southern’s A380s will feature eight first class and 352 economy class seats on the lower deck. The upper deck will have 70 business class seats at the front and 76 economy seats at the rear. The configuration has a high density of economy seats but a typical, for the A380, mixture of premium seats.

Malaysia Airlines to concentrate on Europe and Australia

Malaysia Airlines is due to get its first A380s in 2Q2012. The carrier was due to fit its A380 aircraft with 508 seats in four classes (eight first class, 54 business, 26 premium economy and 420 economy) although this is expected to change following reviews that commenced after AirAsia acquired a stake in the carrier. MAS is due to receive five aircraft in 2012 with the sixth and final A380 due in 2013.

Malaysia Airlines will continue in the long-haul, premium focused mould already established by other A380 operators. It has already announced its A380s will be primarily dedicated to high-yielding European routes – initially London Heathrow and Amsterdam, the first time an A380 will serve the Dutch city. Other routes under consideration are Sydney and Melbourne.

Thai Airways

Like Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways is due to join the A380 sorority in 2012 and has adopted a similar intercontinental focus for the aircraft. The carrier has six A380s on order, with its first two expected for delivery next year.

It has announced that it will initially deploy the aircraft to Frankfurt, with service expected to commence in Oct-2012. Following that Thai expects to serve London Heathrow and Paris CDG.

Airbus markets the A380 as the “ideal solution to alleviate traffic congestion at busy airports”. According to the European manufacturer it is "mega-cities" – those featuring RPKs in excess of 5 billion p/a or 10,000 daily long-haul passengers – that will drive demand for very large aircraft (VLA) such as the A380. Globally, 39 cities currently meet these thresholds, but Airbus expects this to climb to 87 by 2029. More than 90% of global long-haul passenger traffic starts, terminates or goes through an aviation mega-city.

Mega-city growth will be concentrated by Asia, and it shows in the A380 order book. By 2030, Airbus forecasts 10 of the 20 largest VLA airports will be in the Asia Pacific.

Airlines in the Asia Pacific account for nine of the 17 A380 customers. Over the next 12 months three more Asian airlines – China Southern, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways – will join the family of A380 operators, bringing new destinations and new strategies for the giant aircraft.

Airbus’ most recent 20-year global market forecast, released in Sep-2011, raised the outlook for VLA orders from 1738 to 1781 aircraft. 45% of these aircraft are forecast to be delivered to customers in Asia, 23% to go to the Middle East and 19% to European airlines. North America and the rest of the world will purchase just 13% of VLAs, according to Airbus’ predictions.

Configurations - trending toward greater seat density

With two full decks and a nominal design capacity of 525 seats in three-class configuration, the A380 offers airlines a wide number of options in terms of layouts. The aircraft has clear total seat capacity advantage over other long-range aircraft such as the A340-500/600, B777-300/200, B747-400 and even Boeing’s new 747-8 Intercontinental, although the A380 is at a disadvantage when it comes to carrying freight.

Most of the inital A380 customers have proved reluctant to turn the aircraft into an economy class workhorse. Instead, the initial focus has been on the premium traveller. Early A380 configurations have featured lavish amenities, reminiscent of the B747 when it first entered service in the 1970s. Singapore Airlines' A380s boast first class suites with double beds, while Emirates A380s have showers. Several carriers offer bars and lounge areas. Korean Air has even outfitted its aircraft with an onboard duty free store.

Singapore Airlines' initial A380 configuration was just 471 seats, while Emirates, the the second A380 operator, had an initial configuration of 489 seats. A high benchmark may not be set until Emirates introduces a more dense configuration, or Air Austral around 2014 places into service its A380 configured with almost the maximum number of seats – 853 – the aircraft is approved for.

Bucking the trend is Singapore Airlines and Japan's Skymark Airlines. Skymark plans to operate the least dense configuration yet, with a total of 394 seats – approximately 15 seats less than current configurations from Korean Airlines and Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines in May-2011 took delivery of its first lower density A380 having 409 seats over its initial 471-seat configuration. The new configuration has 88 fewer economy seats in favour of 26 additional business class seats.

500 - the magic number of seats?

As the novelty value of the aircraft has begun to wear off, the premium-focused seating configurations are gradually giving way to greater density layouts. Layouts between 500 and 550 seats, with 400-450 economy class seats, have become the norm.

Emirates has supplemented its initial layouts with a higher density configuration featuring more economy seats. It has also announced a high-density 644-seat layout, but has not equipped any of its aircraft in this configuration yet.

Qantas' A380s were introduced in Oct-2008, with 450 seats and the airline was the first to offer premium economy service. The Australian carrier announced last year its intention to abandon first class altogether for its last eight A380s that are now not due for delivery until FY2019. The carrier has opted for a split fleet, to give it “greater flexibility to schedule the right aircraft, and the right configuration, on the right route, based on market demand”. The remaining eight A380 deliveries are due to feature business, premium economy and economy classes, although the exact combination has not been announced.

Lufthansa and Air France, which did not take delivery of their first A380s until 2009, both adopted initial configurations with more than 500 seats. China Southern, Malaysia Airlines and Thai Airways have all announced A380 configurations that feature just over 500 seats.

There is still experimentation with the aircraft though. Air Austral, the Reunion based French carrier, has announced it will configure its aircraft in an all-economy layout of “around 840” seats. After Air Austral announced the all-economy layout, Airbus COO congratulated the carrier on showing “the potential of the A380 in the market of today and tomorrow” and offering the real benefits of "doing more with less".

At the other end of the scale, Japanese LCC Skymark Airlines, is experimenting with an all-premium layout. The airline, which finalised its order for A380s earlier this year, has announced its A380 will feature just 394 seats, the lowest seating density of any operator to date. The carrier's aircraft will have 280 premium-economy seats on the lower deck and 114 business-class seats on the upper deck.

Cathay Pacific Flight Attendant ( Los Angeles Base ) - Interview stages and Process

Below are the interview process & stages of the recent cx cabin crew (LAX base ) held in US shared by one of my reader.

Well it all started out with me handing in my application and me saying hi and talking with other people. Then Dennis Homer (the man in charge of LAX base comes out and introduces himself and tells us the statistics of people that applied (which i will show afterwards) and reminds us that we can apply again if we really want to cause and says that competition is tough and many of his crew have applied many times before being chosen (be honest i only partially believe that.)

Then came the presentation which they showed us what life inside cathay is like which i was sitting up straight and paying attention and smiling throughout the Q and A session for the crew. Then came the reach and language test, they just ask you to touch the wall tape to see if you can reach the mark, as for language it was ok but since i could not read chinese i was just having a conversation with the flight attendant.

The group interview session i think was the main event, I along with 10 others were asked to go into another room where there was a pad of paper, a pen and a piece of paper that had a question the paper was supposed to be turned over so none of us can see the question till it was time but i think they forgot to flip over mine so i anonymously flipped mine over so it was like the others (not sure if it was on purpose or was it just plain accidental they did not flip mine over.)

Dennis comes in and introduces himself and makes us tell him how we heard about the job (i personally know someone that already works there). Then he makes us introduce ourselves and tell everyone some stuff about ourselves and what languages do we speak. For me I did that but however I knew i stumbled on a few words and i was nervous but i did get my words out and i added why i wanted to be a cabin crew member. (what i said was it has been a dream and i like to help people out and make them feel comfortable and make them enjoy the flight.)

Then came the discussion (question will vary but for me it was put out 3 things that make up a employee of the month). For me when it was time to talk i was ready and i got the chance to start since no one wanted to talk in my opinion it was silent till i first opened up by saying "shall i start?" then i laid one of the traits down, then many others started to do that too I from that point just kept smiling and nodding at people who were talking and from time to time i did say "i agree" to the person that finished.

I really don't think i was that aggressive on that discussion or that overpowering, there was a guy though which i could see was very confident and he was a flight attendant for UA. Then we wrapped it up and Dennis then introduces another person to talk to us while he and his coworker handed out yellow cards (same one i assume you posted about basically it just says application is under consideration and will notify within 2 weeks and a list of what to bring if invited to second round)

Because this is the third time i have tried out, Dennis and his co worker remember me and his co worker (named Dominic) was the one who handed me the card which i took from him and he said to me "nice to see you again" and pats me on the shoulder and i just said thank you still smiling of course.

After the interview i shook everyones hand and thanked Dominic for helpin me out earlier when i submitted my resume i didn't get a reply so i called in to check and he said "my pleasure." and then i shook Dennis's hand just as i was walking out to the door and said to him to take care.

Well thats my memory of the interview and like i said above sorry for the "novel," and i believe it's very similar to the blog post you posted up once on Cathay's FA interview but this one is only for LAX base and i think the process is the same for all bases.

Statistics of people applying for LAX base:

14,000 resumes were submitted for the LAX base (just this past couple months)

200 people were called in for the first interview

48 people will be called into the second round of interviews

24 people will be hired

Qatar Airways is one of the only few 5 Star airline in the world. F2 =On completion of the training,2 observer flights and still within 6 months of flight duties QR3300=USD904

F2 =On completion of 6 months of independent flight duties after training period and observation flights (economy class) QR3750=USD1027

The above salary increments are not automatic after specific period of time but are base on performance and merit .

All cabin crew (after AB-initio training) receive an hourly flying pay(HFP),which is grade depandant .This is each hour of productive commercial flying duty.

For F2 Flying pay is QR39(USD10.65) per hour and is computed on the number of hours operated (chocks off to chocks on).Cabin crew have an average of 90-100 flying hrs per month throughout the year.

Additionally, the cabin crew receive hotel meal allowances (country specific)for layovers.this is duty depandant from the time of arrive to the time of departure to/from the city of the layover .

The exciting life of a Pilot/Cabin Crew during standby duty

Each month on your flying roster, you have a couple of days of standby. For those who do not know what standby is,it is basically a set of crew on standby( hence the name) to operate a particular flight just in case anyone call sick or unable to fly due to any unforseen circumstances.

Depending on the airline,the one I flew with has a whole month of standby. Yeah,you read it correctly,one whole month. It is known as the "reserve month". It's the time of the month where it's hard to plan for your life as you have absolutely no idea what the month will bring.

Standby period can varies between 8 to 12 hours and you are required to be reachable if crew scheduling were to call you. So you are like being in a prison at home waiting for the “ call of duty”. As the name suggest, if you were called up for standby, it will be the very last min before the departure of a flight and you will be like scrambling to the aircraft like some sort of a 911 emergency.

You got to be prepared,for example if they were to call you to a destination where it is snowing, you got to have your winter cloths ready or if it a long trip like a 10 days duty,make sure everything sufficient is pack up.

Normally if you are call up for standby,it is always the shitty flights where the crew will call sick such as turnarounds. The chances for people to call sick for layovers/nightstop is lower since there are more money/sightseeing to be made.But sometimes you may be lucky as I have been called up for good flights before :)

So during this period, you are stuck by the phone beside you.Of course, you can risk and chose to go out,but make sure you are reachable as failing to answer or turn up for duty during standby can get you fired ( if you do it often ). But there are always some crew who are trying to be smart by unplugging the phone cord or telling the crew scheduler they have no idea that their mobile's batt has gone flat. Guess they have heard that excuse a million times and either way, they will get you!

If you fly for a private jet or charter company, some of them have no roster at all and basically you are on call all the time. Of course they they will compensate you with higher salary and in some cases better perks and benefits.

Though during standby period, it can be challenging, life at times can be like a mystery and exciting as well. You do not know what will unfold. One min you are in your pajamas, the next thing you knew you will be jet setting to exciting destination such as broadway in new york, shopping in Hong Kong or sipping your favorite coffee in Rome.

Below are the stages of the recent SQ cabin crew open day held in Ipoh shared by one of my reader who successfully got the job.

Well, I had attended an interview session with Singapore Airlines last 2 weeks. August 6th,2011 held at Park Royal KL. I went there all by myself. It was really fun. And, I write this merely for the sake of sharing my personal experience. Mind you, I don't really need any judgement from you. So, here goes =)

We first had our documents checked. Kinda suprised to see not so many people turned up. Well, I expected to see thousands of applicants because oh my, it's Singapore Airlines people ! And most of them were Chinese. Did see 2 Malay guys, but they were like really in their own world. Heh~

After the documents checked, we were divided into groups according to our number. I met Yvonne, a very nice Chinese girl from PJ. We were in the same group, together with another 8 applicants. I was the only Malay in the group. While waiting for our turn, I managed to make another friend. A funny Chinese guy from KL, can't recall his name.

1st stage : Introduction

It was not really an introduction session. During this stage, other than a brief self introduction, we were asked a very random simple question, and the question really varied for each group. For my group, the question was " What is your favorite colour and why ". Thankfully my turn was the second. So I basically had like 2-3 minutes to think. Well, I was shaking, because the question was very random, and I had only few minutes to think for an impressive answer. Despite the anxious, I managed to come up with this answer

" I love red colour because it has the sense of bravery. It is really motivating and inspiring. I look good in red, I know I look good in red. But today I'm not wearing red unfortunately. Erm, and that's all "

Hahahaha tak impressive langsung I know ! I even stuttered as I was really nervous. But at least I did come up with an answer hahaha

The trick : Stay calm, loosen up, and be yourself. You really don't have to kiss their ass with your boring " I love red because it's the colour of SIA " type of answers. Minor hand gestures might help too.

2nd stage : Skin Check

Out of 10, 4 of us managed to get through. Sadly, Yvonne didn't. We did our height and weight meisurement, and proceeded to another room for the skin check. This stage had been haunting me for months, as I have a scar on my neck, and birthmarks on my feet and lower arm. But it was fun though. Thankfully my beautician was a nice, humble, mid-aged lady. I felt at ease lah being checked by her. She asked me to smile, show my hands, and do some walking. I knew I did fine as she didn't ask me with anything.

The trick : CONCEAL YOUR SCARS. That's all.

3rd stage : 1 to 1 interview

All 4 of us passed the skin check. We then proceeded for the next stage. The stages of the interview were all arranged randomly. It wasn't really easy to control all the mixed up feelings that I had. I was excited having my name called out as successful candidate, and at the same time it was nerve-wracking to go to the next stage. For this 1 to 1 interview, I was like shaking to death. There were very few people that got through this stage. Very few. Some of them were very confident with their answers, but still failed. There were 2 bubbly Malay guys, looking very confident. One of them just passed the interview with Emirates. No idea why he's trying SIA. And another one is/was employed by MAS. They didn't stop talking while waiting for their turn. They talked with everyone, except me. They shared stories with everyone, except me. When they both failed the stage, I was kinda happy *evil laugh*

Luckily I had my Chinese friends to share what happened in the interview room. In this stage, we basically were asked on our backgrounds, some knowledge on SIA, and there was also a case study. My interviewer was an elegant gorgeous lady. She didn't torture me much thankfully. I wasn't even asked on SIA knowledge at all. She asked me to explain why would I want to shift from lab to cabin. It was really easy. And my case study was an easy one too. Thing I will never forget is when she said

So yeahh, you read me. I passed the stage wooohoooo !!

The trick : Be prepared. Be honest. Be moderate.

Out of my 4 group members, only 2 of us, me and my supportive Chinese male friend, passed the 1 to 1 interview. We then proceeded to the final stage.

4th stage : Management Round

I am not really sure why it is termed as management round. In this round, we were divided into new groups with 6 members in each. My group members were all girls, and I was still the only Malay. There were Katherine, a bubbly mass comm graduate from KL, Teh, a cute lady from Selangor, talkative Suzanna from Penang, she was actually there for a review, there was also a girl who just came back from US, and sweet, humble Ethelynn from Penang. Me, the girl from US, and Ethelynn didn't talk much. Maybe we were too busy filling up the form and thinking on the next round I guess. We started mingling after been acknowledged that the next round will require teamwork hehe. But still, I didn't talk much. I was kinda oblivious I guess.

There were 2 interviewers, looking very smart in their business suits. They asked us to introduce our friend next to us. I chose Katheryn because she's been telling a lot of things about her so that will make it easy for me hahaha. After that, we were asked to read an announcement. But to me it was just a passage. Then, they gave us one statement, and asked either we agree or disagree. Of course we will have to discuss it. Fortunately, the statement given was pretty easy. " An apple a day keeps the doctors away ". Every 5 of them chose to agree. I took some time to think on the points as I knew that I have to disagree with the statement. Luckily I managed to come up with some points, thanks to my Degree, that I related it to contamination, and radiation. The session was quite challenging, but the interviewers just knew how to lead us to an interesting and relaxing discussion.

and the result...

When Kak Liza, one of the staffs, announced that all of us passed except 1, I thought it was me. BUT IT WASN'T ! Katheryn didn't make it. We were quite suprised. But there was nothing that we can do 'aite ? 4 of us, excluding Suzanna (since she's in review,she already tried the kebaya during previous interview) made our way to the kebaya round.

The trick : I've read somewhere, always choose to disagree when they give you a statement to discuss. But make sure you have strong points to differ.

5th stage : Kebaya round

People, it was like the peak of the interview I tell you. We were asked to put on the kebaya, but the top was very small and super-tight. Just like wearing your corset. I thought I was too weighty, but heyy everyone was facing the same issue okay. It was actually a second skin check. We were asked to bend down so that they can check for back acnes and tattoos. My friends' shin part was checked too for scars. But mine wasn't. I guess they might be considering that I am a Malay. We were also asked to stand under the sunlight so that they can check for any visible scars on the face.

3 of us passed the stage. One of us was having back acne problems, so I am not really sure how it went for her. We were given letter for medical check-up which has to be done within a week.

The trick : Minimize the acsessories as you will have to take them off during this round. And if you are busty, it's best to not wear push-up bra because the kebaya top was damn small. It will be a little bit difficult to zip it. Even if you can zip it, you'll have difficulty to breathe hahaha trust me. It was tight, really.

I passed the medical test. So basically yes, I am fit enough to join the team.

SIA's new long-haul LCC to start with 400-seat B777s, plans 16-aircraft fleet within four years

Singapore Airlines’ new long-haul low-cost carrier will initially operate a fleet of four B777-200s in a dense configuration accommodating about 400 passengers and incorporating a tight 10 seat-abreast economy class cabin. The new airline has begun the process of applying for an air operators’ certificate (AOC) and is preparing to launch services around mid-2012 on medium and long-haul routes from its Singapore base. It plans to pursue a relatively high growth in its first four years, with its fleet slated to reach 16 aircraft in mid-2016.

Higher growth than AirAsia X, but still catching-up

The Singapore Airline (SIA) Group has so far provided few details on the new and unnamed carrier, announcing only that B777-200 aircraft currently in SIA's fleet have been selected as the aircraft type and choosing not to publicly reveal an initial fleet size or configuration. But tender documents issued by SIA’s New Aviation subsidiary for wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE), in-flight Internet and connectivity, and seat power systems state the new carrier plans to have a fleet of four B777-200s within its first few months.

The growth to 16 aircraft within four years plots it in on a higher growth trajectory than low-cost long-haul operator AirAsia X, who commenced services in Nov-2007 with a single A330 and now, two months shy of its fourth anniversary, operates a fleet of 11 A330s and A340s that are of similar capacity to the B777-200. By 2016, however, AirAsia X will have a larger fleet: the carrier has 3 A330-200s and 17 A330-300s due for delivery by 2017, when the first of 10 A350-900 aircraft are to start arriving, according to Ascend data. Low-cost, long-haul operator Jetstar and its Jetstar Asia subsidiary are expected to have a smaller fleet than AirAsia X.

Wireless IFE brings cost savings

SIA becomes the latest carrier to show serious interest in wireless IFE following a recent trial from American Airlines and Aug-2011 commitment from United Airlines to equip its B747 fleet with it. Wireless IFE, in which passengers view entertainment broadcast through wifi networks to their personal electronic devices (PEDs), enables carriers to provide a low-cost solution as they do not have to invest in the costly, weight-heavy, and maintenance-intensive infrastructure of providing a screen, power, and cabling to every seat, the traditional system known as embedded IFE. AirAsia X briefly offered embedded IFE before deciding to remove it due to weight and low uptake from its price point that reflected the cost of the system. AirAsia X estimated it saved one tonne of weight per aircraft by removing embedded IFE. The carrier in Jun-2011 announced it is pursuing its own wireless IFE solution via a partnership with sister company Tune Box.

SIA's new LCC subsidiary to match Emirates with 10-abreast B777 seating

The tenders state that SIA plans to outfit the B777-200s to accommodate "around 400 passengers" - 70 passengers shy of the capacity on its A380 - and asked seatpower vendors to accommodate quadruple seating (four seats together) as well as triple seating and some double seating. This indicates SIA will retrofit its aircraft from their present 3-3-3 to a tight 3-4-3 configuration, squeezing in an extra seat per row, which could add 40 seats per aircraft. The tenth seat per row is typically accommodated by decreasing seat width by 1.25in from 18.45in to 17.2in and also reducing aisle width. Double seats are expected to placed at at emergency exits, bulkhead rows, and the rear of the aircraft where its fuselage tapers.

SIA's B777 fleet presently has the more standard 3-3-3 economy configuration, including on the B777-200s that are earmarked for the new low-cost carrier. SIA operates its 26 B777-200s in two different configurations: one with a total of 288 seats in three-class configuration and another in a two-class configuration seating 323.

Almost all B777 operators configure their economy class sections with nine-abreast seating, although 10-abreast seating is gaining traction and is most prominently used by Emirates, which has over 80 B777s in the ten-abreast configuration. Its largest B777-200 configuration seats 346 in two classes, including a large business class cabin and a 34in pitch in economy. All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines operate B777-200s domestically in Japan with 10-abreast economy seats typically with 31in of pitch. In particular, JAL operates a 380-seat configuration in which approximately 40% of available floorspace is occupied by premium seats - making SIA's planned 400-seat configuration very possible.

However, SIA’s economy class seat pitch is typically 32in. It is unclear if New Aviation will keep a similar pitch as it retrofits the B777-200s it is inheriting with newer generation lighter seats. A similar or only very slightly reduced seat pitch is likely given the long duration of some of the carrier’s flights. Long-haul low-cost carrier AirAsia X also has a 32in seat pitch across its economy class cabins while Jetstar’s long-haul fleet has a 31in economy class seat pitch, including in the A330s it now bases in Singapore.

As New Aviation (the new SIA subsidiary will announce its brand later, although the name "Scoot" is under consideration and has been registered in Singapore) will be the first long-haul low-cost carrier to operate B777s, there is no direct comparison. The two existing long-haul low-cost operators in Asia - Jetstar and AirAsia X - both use A330s/A340s in two-class configurations, with Jetstar accommodating eight abreast in economy while AirAsia X has a tighter configuration of nine-abreast in economy.

Business class or extra legroom economy seats could be offered

SIA has not yet indicated if the new carrier will follow Jetstar and AirAsia X in offering a business class-style premium. Both AirAsia X and Jetstar have found their premium cabins profitable with higher yields than in economy and have improved service for those seats. In particular, AirAsia X started retrofitting its A330 fleet with 12 premium seats but by the time it reached its A340 fleet, which has the same cabin length and width, it added an extra row to give a total of 18 premium seats. If SIA's LCC was to have a premium cabin that matched that of AirAsia X and Jetstar, whose premium cabins are akin to a skimmed-down business class, the SIA group would need to consider if the premium LCC product would cannibalize its mainline premium product or if the two could be complementary, as they are in the Qantas Group between Jetstar and Qantas mainline.

Even if SIA's LCC opts for a single-class configuration, the new carrier could still offer extra legroom seats at the front of the cabin or sell exit row and bulkhead seats for a premium, as is common in the LCC sector. The new airline could also add some frills such as complimentary food and drink and checked luggage with the business or extra legroom economy seats. AirAsia X and Jetstar provide checked luggage and complimentary meals and drinks in their premium cabins. Overall the carrier is planning to pursue a strict no-frills model, following Jetstar and AirAsia X.

Strict new no-frill model eyes Australasia, North Asia, Europe, West Asia and Gulf

New Aviation plans to use its IFE system to sell products which are complimentary on SIA, including food, beverages and movies. This will help generate a robust stream of ancillary revenues. The high density configuration will also be a key cost differentiator with SIA mainline and other legacy carriers.

In the IFE tender document, New Aviation confirms the new carrier will “operate on a no-frills model whereby a very low airfare will be offered for basic transportation services. Passengers may then customise their air travel by purchasing only those additional services they require; such ancillary services may include in-flight entertainment, in-flight connectivity and/or in-seat power supply.”

While New Aviation is closing in on finalizing seat and IFE details, it has not yet selected initial destinations as its analysis of possible routes continues. Only Southeast Asia has been excluded as the carrier will not operate any flights of less than four hours.

“Potential destinations include Australasia (Australia and New Zealand), North Asia (including Greater China, Korea and Japan), UK/Europe, West Asia (including India), and the Gulf States,” New Aviation states in the IFE tender document. “New Aviation will target the long haul, low cost market segment serving routes of four hours or above ex-Singapore with Boeing 777-200 and 777-200ER aircraft. Aircraft will accommodate around 400 passengers.”

New airline targets Apr-2011 entry into service for first aircraft

SIA has previously said the new carrier’s initial fleet will be sourced from B777-200s exiting SIA’s mainline operation. According to the aircraft entry into service schedule published as part of New Aviation’s IFE tender, the first aircraft is slated to enter service on approximately 1-Apr-2012. New Aviation expects to subsequently place into service one additional B777-200 at the beginning of May, June and July, resulting in a four-aircraft fleet by early July-2011.

New Aviation then plans to take a one year hiatus in expansion, operating only four aircraft until it embarks on a second phase of its development in mid 2013. In mid-2013 two additional aircraft B777-200s are slated to enter service. The carrier plans to place into service its first two B777-200ERs in mid-2014, followed by three more B777-200s in mid-2015 and another three aircraft (two B777-200ERs and one B777-200) in mid 2016.

All of SIA's B777-200s are -ER models, but some of the -ER models have engine thrust derates, which reduce maximum take off weights (MTOW) and thus purchasing costs and landing fees as those are typically calculated on MTOW. Nonetheless, SIA refers to a derated B777-200ER as a "B777-200". The derated B777-200ERs ("B777-200s") can be brought up to full -ER standard. This would be necessary for long-haul routes, including to New Zealand and Western Europe.

SIA has said other aircraft types, from within SIA Group’s existing fleet and outside, will be considered at a later phase. But it appears from the IFE tender documents that SIA intends to stick at least for the first five years with only B777-200/200ERs.

According to SIA, the mainline subsidiary now has a fleet of 26 B777-200s and nine B777-200ERs. Of the 26 B777-200s, SIA last year retrofitted 11 aircraft – an upgrade prompted in part by delays in B787 deliveries. New Aviation will likely take 10 of the 15 non-retrofitted B777-200s.

SIA for several years has been aiming to eventually phase out its B777-200 fleet, which is used on short and medium-haul flights within Asia and the Middle East. Several of SIA’s 26 remaining B777-200s will likely be replaced by the 15 additional A330-300s that SIA agreed to lease from Airbus earlier this year and will be delivered between 2013 and 2015.

SIA already leases 19 A330s, which were delivered in 2008 and 2009 and which replaced B777s on medium-haul flights within Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. These aircraft feature a much improved business class product over the B777-200s which have not been retrofitted. The 19 A330s and 11 retrofitted B777-200s feature angled lie-flat business class seats while the 15 non-retrofitted B777-200s have old style recliner seats in business class and in some cases lack the on-demand IFE system that is common on the rest of SIA’s fleet.

At least half of SIA’s A330s are expected to eventually be replaced by A350s. SIA now has 20 A350s and 20 B787s on order. Revised delivery dates for these aircraft have not yet been provided but SIA’s first B787 delivery is expected after it receives its first A350. The A350 and B787 will primarily be used on long-haul routes, although some of SIA's B787s or A350s could also eventually be used by the long-haul low cost carrier, which would substantially reduce operating and maintenance cost and make it more competitive against the B787s Jetstar plans to operate from its Singapore hub and the A350s AirAsia X will operate from nearby Kuala Lumpur.

SIA’s remaining B747-400s are due to be phased out by the end of this year as additional A380s are delivered. The carrier’s nine remaining B777-200ER, which are used on some long-haul routes such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Johannesburg/Cape Town, will also be replaced over the medium-term – likely with B787s.

SIA's large B777 fleet provides for accelerated expansion

SIA also has the option of upgrading any of its 26 B777-200s (derated B777-200ERs) to full B777-200ER standard. Depending on how many long-haul routes the new carrier ends up operating, such upgrades may be pursued as aircraft are moved from SIA to the new subsidiary.

New Aviation for now is slated to get four of SIA’s nine remaining B777-200ERs and 10 of its remaining 25 B777-200s. The other 21 B777-200/200ERs will be returned to lessors, sold onwards or handed over to New Aviation if the new carrier decides to accelerate expansion. According to Ascend data, SIA owns 30 of the 35 B777-200ERs it now operates. That would suggest at least another 16 B777-200/200ERs could potentially be handed over to the new long-haul low-cost carrier for a total of 30 aircraft.

SIA also owns six B777-200ERs that are currently leased to Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA). These aircraft are now due to be returned from late 2012 and could also potentially end up at the new long-haul low cost carrier. RBA has expressed interest in returning some of these aircraft early as part of its network restructuring.

SIA currently does not have any B777-200s parked. The initial four B777-200s slated for New Aviation are expected to exit the SIA mainline fleet early next year and almost immediately go into the hangar for heavy maintenance and retrofit. New Aviation has already booked MRO slots in Singapore for the aircraft to be overhauled and retrofitted. Typically the first aircraft in a new retrofit programme takes about six weeks to be completed, while subsequent aircraft can be completed in a quicker timeframe.

Launch date contingent on how quickly seats and IFE systems can be delivered

In first announcing in May-2011 plans for the new long-haul low fare carrier, SIA said it expected the new airline would commence operations within one year. From an aircraft availability and AOC standpoint, New Aviation seems on pace to meet this target. But this schedule is contingent on the seat and IFE vendors meeting an aggressive timeline.

Typically seat vendors need at least 12 months of lead time. As indicated in its tender with the estimated aircraft in-service dates, New Aviation was initially hoping the seats and IFE systems would be supplied by Apr-2011. This would allow the aircraft to be reconfigured as soon as it comes out of SIA’s fleet and enable proving flights to begin in Apr-2011, paving the way for a potential launch in May-2011. However, in the likely event the first batch seats and IFE systems are not ready in time, the launch may not take place until later in 2Q2011 or early 3Q2011.

The selection of a vendor for the seats and IFE system is a key milestone in moving forward with the launch and honing in on a launch date. Proposals to the IFE tender, which asks for solution offering wireless IFE, wireless connectivity and on demand in seat power supply solutions, were due late last month. The relatively fast lead-time for supplying the kit likely limited the number of responses.

The contract, which will include firm purchases covering only the first four aircraft, should be awarded shortly. The 10 additional aircraft New Aviation plans to place into service from 2013 to 2016 will be covered through options. This gives the new carrier flexibility should it chose against adding aircraft in 2013 or opt for a different solution.

Changes in seats and IFE systems would not be unheard of in the fledgling long-haul low-cost sector as the model is evolving so fast, and wireless IFE would be significantly easier to replace than an embedded system while a better seat, such as with a lower weight that would reduce fuel consumption, could be justified as retrofitting if it enhances operating costs.

SIA's LCC sets high bar for wireless IFE

While wireless IFE is still an emerging technology, SIA has set high requirements, as might be expected from a premium and high-service carrier. A key requirement for New Aviation’s IFE system will be for an interactive buy-on-board solution. Some new generation IFE systems, such as the Panasonic-powered Red system at Virgin America, allow passengers to select food, beverage, movies and even in-flight duty free through touch-screen technology. SIA’s new long-haul low-cost carrier wants to take this one step forward and allow passengers to make such selections using their own PEDs via the vendor-provided wireless IFE product. New Aviation is considering renting a "small stock" of PEDs to passengers who do not bring with them smartphones, tablets or laptops.

Wireless IFE reduces aircraft weight, which can translate to fuel savings or capability to carry additional cargo, which would be a lucrative offering for SIA's LCC. AirAsia X and Jetstar Asia market belly space on their aircraft through their limited networks, whereas SIA has a significantly larger cargo network it could call on when space permits.

Some industry observers have questioned if wireless IFE means airlines will have to give up control, particularly to interrupt the system for duty free sales and emergency announcements, New Aviation wants full control. It says the solution it seeks “shall have the ability to ‘push’ information, such as in-flight sales, F&B offers, information, etc., onto passengers’ PED. The supplier shall include in the proposal what the passenger will experience for this feature”. Bidders for the tender could, for example, propose pop-up notifications for duty sales. SIA has specified the system must be able to be cut off, via switches in the cockpit and cabin, in the event of an emergency. SIA's LCC has not ruled out a two-aircraft trial for up to three months prior to committing to long-term contract. The system is requested to run on 802.11b/g/n wireless networks, which the majority of PEDs accommodate, and accommodate PEDs of various operating systems, including Mac OS, Windows, iOS, Android and Blackberry.

Very few suppliers offer wireless IFE. American Airlines has a wireless IFE trial with Aircell, who also supplies it with connectivity over a ground network unavailable in Asia, likely ruling Aircell out as SIA's LCC tender favors companies who can provide multiple solutions in the IFE, connectivity, and seatpower scope. Lufthansa Systems is gaining for its wireless IFE offering and is expected to announce later this month a new customer in Virgin America, who could potentially bring Virgin Australia in as well. AirAsia X is working with Flight Focus and sister company Tune Box for its wireless IFE solution and has said it will offer its product to other airlines, but only once AirAsia X has a newer version.

Overlooked in supplying wireless IFE or in-flight connectivity is seatpower to recharge devices, whose batteries are especially drained when using wifi ports to access the wireless IFE or connectivity, which airlines are reluctant to address due to costs. SIA's LCC however, is pursuing seatpower, which SIA mainline B777-200s lack in economy. SIA may consider a bidder who can charge passengers for the use of seat power, thus creating another ancillary revenue stream; AirAsia X has been studying this feasibility for over a year. Not every seat, however, will have a dedicated powerport, as is found on some aircraft today. The tender specifies there should be one outlet for every double seat and then two outlets for triple and quadrule seats. Also specified is an outlet in the cockpit sidewall, indicating SIA's LCC may pursue an electronic flight-bag solution. SIA is rightfully keeping watch on weight, requesting suppliers to state the weight of each seatpower as well as for the total system.

Internet and mobile phone support also requested

SIA's LCC has requested in-flight connectivity to provide Internet usage as well as voice and data services over mobile networks. SIA's LCC wants all mobile networks accommodated, including the common 3G network used by smart phones and the CDMA network used primarily in North America and Japan. SIA's LCC explicitly states the connectivity solution "should also be able to support all mobile phone types, e.g. Mobile Phones, Third Generation Mobile Phones, PDA phones, BlackBerry and iPhone, etc."

For in-flight Internet, SIA's LCC requests a solution that can accommodate the basic web browsing and corporate e-mail access via a Virtual Private Network, as well as voice over IP (such as Skype), video-conferencing and live broadcast of time-sensitive television and radio programme, such as news, sports and special events. These latter requirements require large amounts of bandwidth, which SIA's LCC may find is commerciall unviable due to the high cost of satellite communication, although connectivity provider Row 44 believes it can offer viable live broadcast options. Uninhibited in-flight connectivity coverage is less guaranteed in Asia than the developed in-flight connectivity markets of North America and Europe. Indonesia, for example, requires further legislative changes for uninhibited connectivity on aircraft, a hindrance for aircraft passing through Indonesia airspace en route to Australia.

The tender requests suppliers to state performance affects, notably "drag introduced by the new antenna installation" for connectivity. The connectivity solution may be used to replace the ACARS datalink that is supplied over ocean by costly Inmarsat satellite coverage.

Conclusion: SIA's long-haul low-cost model starting to take shape

SIA seems to be taking all the necessary steps to differentiate its new long-haul low-cost carrier from its existing legacy mainline operation and SilkAir regional subsidiary. SIA will be innovative with its in-flight product, just as it is often the pioneer in the premium end of this sector. But instead of matching SIA in providing leading IFE products as one of many frills, at the new carrier the IFE product will be the key to unlocking critical ancillary revenues and keeping its cost base low.

Charging for all frills – including baggage, food and IFE – is an important component of the long-haul low-cost model. A denser configuration in economy class, through reduced seat pitch and/or narrower seats, is also necessary as almost all other costs are fixed.

For example, it will be difficult for the new carrier to achieve significantly lower labour costs than SIA given the general shortage of pilots in the region although some productivity improvements can be expected. The opportunity to save on airport costs will also be limited because Singapore only has one airport and Changi’s budget terminal, which is already approaching capacity due to the rapid expansion at Tiger Airways, is not at least for now an option for New Aviation’s B777s.

Fuel costs of course are also equal for all types of carriers although having a very dense configuration helps reduce the per seat fuel cost. New Aviation also will likely be able to generate higher load factors than SIA, which has reported relatively low load factors in recent months. In fact the load factor gap between LCCs and full service carriers operating in the region has been widening, indicating the stronger growth in demand at the low end of the market. It is this growth that prompted SIA Group’s move into the long-haul low-cost sector.

There are still a lot of unknowns with the new carrier. For example New Aviation hasn’t yet said if network connectivity with SIA will be pursued although indications seem to point to a strict point-to-point model at least initially. As the long-haul low-cost model is still relatively new and continues to evolve, there will likely be strategic adjustments even after the new carrier launches next year, as AirAsia X and Jetstar have done. But the commitment is there from SIA Group to boldly enter this exciting end of the market.

The initial fleet plan may be modest given the large widebody orders that have been placed by AirAsia X and Jetstar (AirAsia X for example currently has 11 widebodies with 30 more on order) but the growth in early years is large compared to AirAsia X and Jetstar, and SIA has always been a conservative company. It also has a large B777-200 fleet at its disposal to transfer to the LCC without ordering new aircraft, although those will bring costs down. If the new carrier gets off to a good start, the expansion will likely be accelerated and competition with the Jetstar and AirAsia groups will intensify. The impact on the broader Asian market will be huge and other major airline groups in the region may feel compelled to launch their own long-haul low-cost subsidiaries.

We’re sorry we have no closet space for your oversized bag.
We’re sorry that’s not the seat you wanted..
We’re sorry the plane is full and there are no other seats available.
We’re sorry you didn’t get your upgrade.
We’re sorry that guy makes you uncomfortable because he looks like a terrorist.
We’re sorry there’s a thunderstorm and we can’t take off.
We’re sorry we don’t know when it will stop.
We’re sorry our plane has no music or video entertainment for your 3-hour flight.
We’re sorry we ran out of your favorite soda.
We’re sorry there are no more sandwiches.
We’re sorry that Budweiser costs $6.
We’re sorry we don’t have diapers for your baby.
We’re sorry we don’t have milk for the same baby.
We’re sorry you can’t hang out by the cockpit door waiting to use the bathroom.
We’re sorry you can’t hang out at the back of the airplane.
We’re sorry you have to sit down and fasten your seatbelt.
We’re sorry you have to put your seat up for landing.
We’re sorry we don’t know when we’re going to land.
We’re sorry we don’t know whether your plane to (substitute any city in the world) will be waiting for you when we land.
We’re sorry we’ve been diverted because we ran out of gas waiting to land.

We’re sorry for these and so many other things that we have absolutely no control over but which we are held accountable for EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Please understand. Flight attendants are not the enemy. We share your space. More than anyone – we want to have a nice, pleasant travel experience.There is a reason behind everything we ask you to do. It may be a FAA directive. It may be security related. It may be a company procedure.

We don’t just make stuff up. We don’t spend 8 weeks at the flight academy learning how to pour a Coke. There are many things that flight attendants are watching for constantly on every flight FOR YOUR SAFETY. It’s not because we’re bored or so controlling that we just enjoy telling people what to do. I, for one, would like to have one flight where I didn’t have to repeatedly tell people to put their seats up for landing.

Seriously. Can’t you just do what we ask sometimes? Without the glares, eye rolling and disdain? For the record – putting your seat up for landing may not seem that important to your personal safety. However, it is very important for the person sitting BEHIND YOU. If you have ever tried to get out of a row where someone has their seat back you know it can be a challenge. Try grabbing your ankles (emergency brace position) or getting out of that row quickly with smoke in the cabin.

Understand a little better now?

Many of the things we ask passengers to comply with are FAA directives. Like carry-on bag stowage and exit row requirements. When we can serve drinks (in the air) and when we can’t (after the aircraft door is closed or on an active taxi-way). We are only allowed to move about the cabin during taxi out for safety related duties. We can’t get you blankets, or hang coats, or get you drinks. It’s not because we don’t want to. It’s because we are held personally responsible if we fail to comply with FAA directives. Meaning that the FAA can fine us personally up to $10,000 if we fail to comply or enforce an FAA Directive.

Like no bags at the bulkhead. No children in the exit row. No one moving around the cabin during taxi. Perhaps now you know why flight attendants get a little testy when people move about the cabin when they’re not supposed to. It’s not the company that gets in trouble for that. It’s us.

Personally, I wish airlines would show worst-case scenario safety videos. Like what happens if you walk through the cabin during turbulence. There could be a guy who has just fallen and smacked his face on the metal armrest and now has a bloody, gushing broken nose. Or an elderly lady who now has a broken arm because someone walking to the bathroom fell on her.

Maybe a passenger with a broken neck because somebody opened an overhead bin during turbulence and a suitcase fell out and onto the person sitting beneath it. These things can easily happen in a fast moving, unstable air environment.

Please just trust that we are looking out for your best interest and stop fighting with us about everything we ask you to do. It is exhausting.

Finally, please, please direct your hostility and frustrations in the direction where they will be most effective: The customer service department. They are the ones equipped to handle your complaint and implement procedures for CHANGE.

Think about it. Complaining to the flight crew about all your negative travel experiences is about the same as complaining to the office janitor because your computer isn’t working. It may make you feel better to vent about it – but it really won’t fix anything. More than anybody we are already aware of the lack of amenities, food, service and comfort on the aircraft. Please share your concerns with the people in the cubicles at corporate who need that information to make better decisions for the flying public.

It’s frustrating that so many people are in denial about what the travel industry is about now. The glory days of pillows, blankets, magazines and a hot meal for everyone are long gone. Our job is to get you from point A to point B safely and at the cheapest possible cost to you and the company. So be prepared. If you are hungry – get a sandwich before you get on the plane.

If it’s a 3 hour flight, anticipate that you may get hungry and bring some snacks. If you are prone to being cold – bring a wrap. Think for yourself and think ahead. Otherwise, don’t complain when you have to pay $3 for a cookie and are left with a crusty blanket to keep you warm.

We hear often that the service just isn’t what is used to be. Well, the SERVICE we provide now isn’t what it used to be. When I was hired, my job was to serve drinks, meals, ensure that safety requirements were met and tend to in-flight medical issues.

Since 9/11 my primary job is to ensure that my airplane will not be compromised by a terrorist. 9/11 may be a distant memory now to many, but be assured that EVERY DAY a flight attendant reports to work he or she is constantly thinking about 9/11. We feel a personal responsibility to ensure that something like that never happens again. We can never relax. We can never not be suspicious about someone’s intentions.

It is difficult to be vigilant and gregarious at the same time. Especially when most of us are working 12 hour days after layovers that only allow 5-6 hours of sleep. Not because we were out partying and having a grand time on the layover – but because the delays that you experience as a passenger also affect us as a crew, so that what was a 10 hour layover is now 8 hours which doesn’t leave a lot of time to recover from what has become an increasingly stressful occupation.

Despite everything, I still enjoy being a flight attendant.

I am writing this letter because I do still care about my profession and about the public perception of flight attendants. In the increasingly challenging travel world it is becoming more imperative than ever for people to just be decent to each other. I can go through an entire day without one person saying anything remotely civil. I will stand at the aircraft door and say hello to everyone who enters and maybe 50% will even look at me and even fewer will say hello back.

I will try to serve someone a meal who can’t be bothered to take their headsets off long enough for me to ask them what they want. Most of the time the only conversation a passenger has with me is when they are complaining.

Is it any wonder why flight attendants have shut down a bit? After suffering the disdain of hundreds of passengers a day it’s difficult sometimes to even smile, much less interact. We are human. We appreciate the same respect and courtesy that passengers do.

The next time you fly, try treating the flight attendants the way you would like to be treated. You may be surprised how friendly your flight crew is when they are treated like people.

Indonesian airline Garuda under fire for near-naked interview

(THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - An Indonesian airline came under fire after having female job applicants get almost naked during an interview.

Garuda Indonesia has recently interviewed applicants to pick 18 Korean crew members for its new flight service.

The women were ordered to take off all their clothes except their underpants for a 'health examination'. A male doctor touched their breasts to check whether they have implants, which the company said would endanger them when flying.

The company said it conducted the same examination when picking stewardesses in all countries, including Japan and Australia.

Apart from the usual stuff like grooming, being outspoken and confident, friendly and etc etc which you have already known, maybe I can share with you the method that I use personally and that of my fans ( those who pass and successfully got the job). By the way, I have helped hundreds of them achieve their dreams and from what I observed, though they are all from different background, they share similar attitude.

It is being proactive which simply means that you do and plan things ahead even though you are not required to do so. Confuse? Let me give you an example. Most will ask me when is the next interview and if you are a proactive person, your question would be” can you tell me what do I need to know or prepare for the next upcoming interview “. The difference between them is the second question shows that the person is preparing even though there are no opening currently. They do not wait till the last minute and take small baby steps in order to make sure they are well prepared, win over other candidates and be successful during the interview.

Basically there is no right timing to get things going. If you want it, you do it today or from this moment. There is no such thing as “try”. I will try my best, will try to study next week and blah blah blah. For example, if you want to call someone, you can’t say I will try to call, is either you pick up the phone to call or you don’t.

I know it is “easier said than done” , but when I want something, I am very focus towards achieving my goals and will do whatever it takes to achieve it. I still remember, to get my first pilot job, there was a briefing but was only made known to me one day before the event. Well, the next thing I knew was I am inside the plane the very next day to be there on time.

Next, it’s very important that you can ‘taste’ success now, regardless of how small it is. That itself will propel you to continue your journey and ignite your flame of passion to keep you excited. Before I was a crew, I use to go to the airport just to catch a glimpse at all the pilots and cabin crew walking out in their smart uniform and imaginating myself in their shoes. Most or my friends thought that I am crazy but that is exactly what I did and guess what, I actually told that to the Emirates interviewers and boy was she impress.

In my recent event organizing a pilot recruitment, some of the candidates are really proactive. I don’t know them and though they are from all over the world, whatever is needed from them such as documents and all, they are very fast and efficient and making sure that I have receive all of them. On the other hand, I have some whom I personally contacted since I know them and yet they can’t be bothered to even let me know whether they are coming or not. Funny thing is, they are the ones who keep telling me that their life is a mess now and it is so hard to achieve their dreams. So point is, when you want something, you got to be a responsible person.

As usual, normally those who did not pass will come and feedback to me and tell me that, hey, that girl is so ugly , or that person talk too much and how on earth she manage to pass. Before you start criticizing others, maybe you should take a good look at yourself on the mirror. You may be the best candidate around but that may be the very reason the interviewers did not want to pass you. Airlines certainly do not want to hire a person especially with an attitude.

So how do I know that I have talked to little or too much? My advice is, only mention or say whatever is needed and don’t go overboard. For example during my interview, I even told them I know exactly when Ek started flights to Malaysia, how many times per day, their exact flight number and their STA and STD. You see, though I was not ask to give such a detail answer, I answered “ extra” and show them that I am serious and genuinely want to join their airline and most importantly I did my homework. So back to the point, as you can see from this example, I did talk more compared to the other candidates but I make sure it is relevant and something which would impress the interviewer.

So there you go, some of my personal secrets to be a better candidate. I know some of you will say, Hey Andy, it is easy for you to say the above as you use to work for one of the best airline in the world and you achieved your dreams now. Well, don’t forget, I was once in your shoes before. I am bless to be where I am today but It did come with my fair share of failures, sacrifices, disappointment and etc etc. Most of you who know me personally know that it is not easy to be where I am today. Well , I took small baby steps to achieve success. After all, Rome wasn’t build in a day. If I can do it, so can YOU!!!
